We invite you to participate in the privilege of giving.
This new system is just one more way in which you can bring your tithes and offerings to the church, following the principles of Scripture. “Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine” (Proverbs 3:9-10 ESV).
The Bible promises a special blessing to those who failthfully engage in church ministry with the spiritual gift of generosity. Yes, according to the apostle Paul, contribution is a special gift of the Holy Spirit! “If it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully” (Romans 12:8 NIV).
This is not enforced. It is an invitation to be blessed by participating in God’s mission. It is a privilege: “One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want” (Proverbs 11:24 ESV).
But is there a difference between tithes and offerings? Yep! And as the giver of those tithes and offerings, you should know how to tell them apart. The tithe is the first 10 percent of your income that God calls you to give to your local church each month. An offering is any money you choose to give above and beyond the tithe.
The prophets were adamant about faithfulness in the duty of tithing: “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need” (Malachi 3:10 ESV).
The apostle Paul also speaks of the blessedness of contribution, and emphasizes the importance of doing it out of one’s own godliness and piety, instead of under compulsion. H says: “whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:6-7 ESV).
God bless you, dear contributor! Please pray as you give. Do it cheerfully and thankfully. We’re glad to see your fidelity and your commitment.
