Praying the Scriptures: Philippians 1:27-30

Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved — and that by God. For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him, since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.

Gracious God and Heavenly Father,

These words of Paul from prison to the believers in Philippi, encouraging them to stand firm in the face of persecution and to rejoice in all circumstances is a timeless message for all who believe. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego refused to bow down to King Nebuchadnezzar’s idol in the face of certain death in a fiery furnace and were rewarded for their courage and faithfulness. Peter and the disciples boldly proclaimed the gospel often to an openly hostile audience, knowing that they might suffer or be killed as a result. After Paul’s conversion, he went from persecutor to persecuted and suffered many beatings, imprisonment and finally death for his Christian witness.

In our times, conservative Christian Charlie Kirk boldly confronted the anti-Christian worldview now prevalent in the West and was assassinated for speaking the counter-cultural truth that not all want to hear. Countless others continue to face hatred and persecution for belief in Christ every day. Paul encourages all those in this situation to stand firm, to act in a way that honours God, and to remain unafraid, since it is our privilege to be closer to Christ through our suffering. Paul also reminds us that those who oppose Christ will be destroyed but that his faithful followers will be saved. LORD, give us the strength to be bold for your gospel, to stand up for your truth and be the witness you would have us be to the world, for our blessing and your glory.

In Christ’s name. AMEN.
