Text: Ephesians 5:25

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”

Did you notice the date for today’s devotional? Its Valentine’s Day! And this verse is a perfect reminder to the husbands as to how to love their wives. Husbands are to love their wives as Jesus loved the Church and gave himself up for her. How did Jesus do that? Philippians 2:5 provides us with an answer to that question:

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in very nature God,
    did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
    by taking the very nature of a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    by becoming obedient to death—
        even death on a cross!

Jesus died on the cross for the Church (for the believers), and He became nothing. This means that the husband has to do the same for his wife. To become nothing so she becomes everything. To be crucified so that all that he is, is for his wife. This is what it means for a husband to love his wife.

And before you wives point this out to your husbands, take note of verse 5 in Philippians 2. It says – “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus…” This means, that Christian wives are to have the same mindset as Jesus; they are to lay their lives down for their husbands. This is the goal for both partners of a Christian and godly marriage.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the reminder that as a follower of Jesus Christ, I am to have the same mindset as He did and lay my life down for my spouse as an expression of love for them. Holy Spirit help me to do this. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
