Daily Light: Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)

Text: Psalm 78:19
They spoke against God; they said, “Can God really spread a table in the wilderness?”
When the Israelites asked this question, they were in the wilderness, having just been delivered from slavery in Egypt. They witnessed the destruction of the false deities of Egypt. They saw the death of all the first bort of Egypt, including the death of Pharoah’s son. Later, they would see God open up the Red Sea that would drown the entire Egyptian army and chariots. And when they complained about being thirsty, water was provided from the rock.
Time and again, the Lord showed His faithfulness by His signs and wonders. But the Israelites had short memories, and unable to remind themselves of what the Lord had done. The were fickle. And they were fickle because instead of always looking to the Lord, they were always looking at the circumstances and concluding that God couldn’t do anything for them.
And now they were hungry. And they doubted that God could help. They acknowledged that God had provided water:
“True, he struck the rock, and water gushed out, streams flowed abundantly, but can he also give us bread? Can he supply meat for his people?” (Psalm 78:20)
That is a complete lack of faith. As the people of God, we must always remember – Nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:37). We must believe God at His Word, that He is with us and will always take care of us.
What difficulty are you facing? What circumstances are overwhelming you? Don’t be fickle and faithless, but be bold and brave because of His faithfulness to you.
Heavenly Father – thank you for always being faithful to us, even when we are not faithful to you. Holy Spirit, help me to keep my eyes on Jesus – the author and perfector of my faith. Empower me to walk in faith and obedience to you today. In Jesus name I pray.
