Daily Light Devotional: Your Word is a Lamp to My feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)

Text: Psalm 1:1

Everyone wants to be happy. Every one is pursuing happiness. But really, what is happiness. Many would define “happiness” as attaining financial security; emotional stability and inner peace. What that looks like is endless. But is that really happiness? Others may argue that happiness is about having the freedom to do whatever they want.

Psalm 1:1 gives us a clue about happiness. The verse says:

Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers…

“Blessed” can be translated as: “Happy is the man who…” who doesn’t do certain things. Notice the path of compromise – “does not walk  in step with the wicked”, “or stand in the way of sinners” or “sit in the company of mockers”.  Walk, stand and sit. Once we are compromised, its downhill from there. That is not the path to happiness or the way to being blessed. Rather Psalm 1:2-3 gives us the clue to true happiness.

but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,

and who meditates on his law day and night.

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,

which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—

 whatever they do prospers.

When we delight in the law of the Lord, the Word of God, we will be happy and fruitful, flowing in abundance. When we are rooted in Christ (Colossians 2:7), growing deep in Him, the river of the Holy Spirit will bear the fruit of His character (Galatians 5:22-23) and that is true happiness. We are either growing and flowing, or compromised and dying. How are you doing?

Prayer: Lord, plant me deep in the Word, and deep in Jesus so that by the water of your presence I may bear the fruit of your character day by day. Thank you for this happiness. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
