Daily Light Devotional: Your Word is a Lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)

February 27 2026

Text: John 15:15

I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.

Many have the misguided notion that God is a distant, far away, uninterested entity that has joy only in bossing us around and is only looking to be served. This perception does not line up with the text for today. Jesus said to His disciples – “I no longer call you servants”. What this says is that God is not wanting to be the distant, far away, uninterested God but instead Jesus goes on to say – “Instead, I have called you friends”.

I have called you friends. This suggests that Jesus desires to be friends, good friends, intimate friends. Jesus came to remove all the barriers between those who would believe and Himself. Jesus’ desire is that they would be drawn into a personal, intimate relationship with the second person of the Trinity. In that relationship, Jesus would share what He knows from the Father with His friends. This is an amazing privilege.

Furthermore, this intimacy is a by product of abiding in Christ. In John 15 Jesus says repeatedly – “abide in me” (and I will abide in you). And note also, that Jesus says when the disciples abide in Him, they will bear fruit, will bear more fruit and bear much fruit. This is the nature of this relationship with Jesus – it is increasingly fruitful. It is abundantly full. Jesus caps this off with this statement – “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete”. And then He says – I call you friends.

Christians are to be growing in their intimate knowledge of Jesus; overflowing with the fruit of His character (see Galatians 5;22-23). No matter the circumstances, you can be full of joy because you are friends with Jesus.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the Good News that I am a friend to Jesus and He considers me His friend. May the joy of that friendship be truly abundant – reflecting the light and love of Jesus in all my situations today. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
