Daily Light Devotional: Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)

Text: John 1:12
Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.
A common misperception, understanding or idea that is found in the Church and outside the Church is the statement that says – “We are all God’s children”. That is absolutely NOT true. The truer statement is “we are all created by God”. But that statement does not imply salvation or belonging.
Our text for today makes it very clear – to all those who believed in the name of Jesús, and who would accept Him as Lord and Saviour, thereby being born again – God gave the right (and privilege) and the power (ability) to be the children of God. Remember what Paul says that we have been adopted (see Romans 8:15 and Ephesians 1:5), which means that those who have not been adopted remain as orphans.
Adoption requires a legal transaction, and the legal transaction was the work of Christ on the cross. In being born again, you have been adopted into the family of God and that means you are a brother or sister to Jesus.
Romans 8:17 says that if we are God’s children, then we are joint heir with Christ, everything that belongs to Him becomes ours by faith. This is the right/privilege and power that we have as the children of God.
Knowing that we are the children of God, and that He is our brother should give us great joy, peace, confidence and boldness – no matter what we are going through.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the amazing news that because I am born again, and in Christ – I am your child and Jesus is my brother, that you have made all provisions for me this day. I surrender to you in all that this day entails. May I walk with joy and confidence this day as a child of God. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
