Daily Light: April 27th

Daily Light Devotional: Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)

Text: Romans 1:21

“For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.”

During our honeymoon in 2016, Marilyn and I stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon. And when you stand at the edge, observing the majestic colours from the layers of rock and sediments, it looks more like it was hand painted than actually the process of millions of years giving shape to the canyon. Standing there, it was easy to “know” that it was created by God. It was His handiwork.

We can look at the stars, the sun and the moon, look at all of creation and know that there is God, that He is creator. The Greek word in our text in Romans 1:21 means to “know”something in a general sense. When I look at a picture of the Great Wall in China, I can know that it is a picture of the Great Wall of China – but I have never been up and close. Another example would be that I know in a general sense that Charles the III is the King of Canada, but I don’t know him personallylike his sons would.

And that is the point that Jesus is making in Matthew 7:23 when He says, “depart from me, for I never knew you”. The Greek word here is related to a specific knowledge. Jesus knows that they are there, but doesn’t know them personally. It’s in knowing Jesus specifically, and personally, that we receive salvation.

Do you know Jesus generally or personally? Have you confessed your sins and repented and submitted to His Lordship? If no, you can do that now. If you do know Jesus personally, then may His light and love be your guide today.

Prayer: Father, thank you for the gift of salvation. Jesus thank you for this personal relationship and Holy Spirit, released in me the joy of salvation that I might be your witness to others today. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
