Daily Light Devotional: Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)

September 8  2026

Text: Psalm 119:47

I delight in your commands because I love them.

Many people have said things like – “I love pizza”, “I love chocolate” or “I love coffee”.  It is interesting that the root of the Hebrew word “delight” suggests being “smeared”. And the Hebrew word for love being used here is about “desire”; the object of one’s affection. This verse is describing a person who cannot get enough of what they desire. They love that chocolate cake so much, that when they eat it, it ends up smeared on their face. This is how we should be approaching the Word of God – we simply can’t get enough. We should love the Word so passionately that we want to gorge ourselves on it. Unfortunately, many read the Word without any desire for the Word. Many read the Word just to meet some kind of religious obligation, forgetting that the Word of God is living and able to transform us. But it’s not going to have any effect on us if we just casually read; if we don’t read it with a hunger for the Lord.

How about you? Are you smearing yourself with the Word because you love it?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, as I read your Word, put a hunger in my heart for more and a hunger for more of you. Let me never turn down or turn away from the Word. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
