Text: Psalm 112:1
Praise the Lord.
Blessed are those who fear the Lord,
Who find great delight in His commands.
It seems in these days that “the fear of the Lord” has greatly diminished. The Almighty God has been reduced to simply being “a buddy”. Yes, Jesus said to His disciples that He called them friends, but they never lost the sense of His glory, majesty and holiness. The had that “fear of the Lord”.
This “fear” is not about being terrified or terrorized but rather is the recognition of God being a Holy God and we are not. Itsembracing the humble position that He is God and we are not; that He is the creator and we are the creature; that He is the potter and we are the clay.
Our verse for the day is a strong parallelism. “Blessed (or happy) are those who fear the Lord” this is followed by a parallel statement to magnify the point: “they find delight in His commands”. Fear of the Lord brings delight.
Verses 2 to 9 describes details of this delight:
v. 2 children will be mighty
v. 3 wealth and riches are in their houses
v.4 light shines upon them
v.5 good will come to them
v.6 they will not be shaken
v.7 they will have no fear of bad news
v.8 their hearts are secure
v.9 their righteousness endures forever.
Because they have focused on the fear of the Lord. Giving reverence and glory to God, the Covenant relationship is expressed in obedience which brings the blessings of God; the abundant life that Jesus promised.
Today, as your day unfolds, may your eyes be constantly on the Lord that His blessing might be poured out upon you. Let that be your prayer today.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I acknowledge that you are Holy and majestic and I am nothing but dust. May my life today be a life lived in honour of you. I fix my eyes upon you Jesus and I rejoice with anticipation all the blessings that are mine because of your goodness. Be glorified in and through me. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
