Text: Matthew 5:44
“Love your enemies…”
The Bible is full of challenges and one of those big challenges comes to us from Matthew 5: 44 – “Love your enemies”. That is quite the challenge. Who wants to love their enemies. Enemies are hurtful, spiteful and just terrible people be around. Because of that it can be hard to love our enemies. Nevertheless, the Lord commands us to do it. He commands us to do what He did. What? Jesus loved his enemies? Absolutely.
It says in Romans 5:10
“For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!”
As believers, we are to love like God, forgive like God and love our enemies like God. The question is – how do we do it? How do we love like God and how do we love our enemies as God loved His enemies? The answers to that comes from Colossians 1:8
“…He has told us about the love for others that the Holy Spirit has given you.”
Jesus is Emmanuel, and He is God with us, for us and in us. His indwelling presence enables and empowers us to love as He loves. He empowers us to love our enemies.
As follower of Jesus, we will have enemies. Jesus said we will be hated as He was hated and the only way we can respond is by loving them. They will lknow we are Christians by our love.
Heavenly Father. We know that we are to love as you have loved us. But it is so hard to do that. As you have loved me and as your love is in me. Holy Spirit manifest that love for others in me. All to the Father’s glory. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
