Daily Light Devotional: Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)
February 20 2026
Text: Psalm 139:23
Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
We are in the season of Lent. The purpose of Lent is to engage in the process of self-examination, for cleansing and renewal so that it is “no longer I who lives, but Christ who lives within me” (Galatians 2:20).
Jesus says in Matthew 15:16-20 that what comes out of our heart is what make us unclean. And what is in our heart is the effects of our old sinful nature and the effects of those who have sinned against us. The interesting thing is that we really can’t examine our hearts because “the heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)
It is the Holy Spirit who can examine our hearts, understand our hearts, cleanse our hearts and give us a new heart. It is the Holy Spirit who can examine us to “see if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting”. (Psalm 139:24) As the Holy Spirit reveals the offensive ways within our hearts, He will then lead us in the way everlasting.
Lent is a time of self-reflection and self-examination and it is only as the Holy Spirit reveals our heart to us, that we can confess our broken hearts, that we can receive forgiveness, grace and healing. The Lord doesn’t want to show us the failures of our hearts to condemn us. He wants to show us our hearts so that we might know freedom and victory. What do you need the Lord to get out of your heart?
Prayer: Lord, thank you for the cross, that guarantees my forgiveness and freedom. Examine my heart, and bring to light all the sinfulness and brokenness. I confess it all, and give it all to you and by your shed blood, may I know freedom and redemption – in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
