Text: Romans 12:1
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
The goal of the Christian life is for the Christian to be conformed to the image of Christ (Romans 8:29). In order for this to happen, we have to die to self. And this is the theme that Paul is focused on here in Romans 12:1.
Let pull the verse apart. The verse begins with – “Therefore”. Because of everything that Paul has written in the first 11 chapters, he says – therefore. He is about to make a statement that should be the response “in view of God’s mercy”. God’s mercy, demonstrated in Christ on the cross, as payment for our sin debt, is worthy of a response. What should the response be?
Paul urges the believers to “offer” their bodies as living sacrifices. That’s an interesting comment. The idea is of an altar. An altar upon which a sacrifice (like a bull or lamb) is placed. Those sacrifices are dead. They are pieces of meat place on the alter to be a “burnt offering” onto the Lord. But we are “living” sacrifices. We have been made alive in and through Christ. Having been born again, we present ourselves on the altar of sacrifice so that by the fire of the Holy Spirit me might be consumed as a “burnt offering”. In Exodus 29:18 it says that the entire offering is place on the altar – burned and becomes a pleasing aroma to the Lord. When we do likewise, we are pleasing onto the Lord. This is our true and complete act of worship.
And what is the purpose of this offering? Romans 12:2 tells us:
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Our mind will be conformed not to the ways of the world but in fact will be conformed to the mind of Christ in order that we might know His ways and do His will. The remainder of Romans 12 tells us all the ways the mind of Christ will govern and guide us. I would encourage you to read it and pray it through. This is the surrendered life.
Prayer: Father God, in gratitude that in Christ I am your living child, I present myself to you as a living sacrifice, that I might be consumed by the fire of the Holy Spirit, be a pleasing aroma in your sight and live a life completely surrendered to you. In Jesus name I pray.
