Daily Light Devotional: Your Word is a lamp onto my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)

Text: Deuteronomy 7:9
Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.
One of the questions that is often asked by believers is – “Am I going to make it?” This question arises because, despite understanding that we are saved by grace through faith, thisverse from Deuteronomy makes the strong suggestion that if we are disobedient, we are not going to make it.
Let’s not forget that this verse is in the Old Testament. And in the Old Testament economy, our disobedience will keep us separated from God. This verse is a promise and all promises in the Old are fulfilled in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20). Jesus has met the requirements of not only the law, but also of the Covenant. This is reinforced by Hebrews 7:22 that states that Jesus is the “guarantor of a better Covenant”. Jesus purchased a better Covenant with His blood on the cross and guarantees it by His resurrection. The life, death and resurrection verify that the Lord our God is indeed faithful.
Moreover, the promise of the New Covenant is that the Holy Spirit makes it possible for us to live and abide in Christ and to be faithful and obedient to the Lord. This is the eternal Covenant the Lord established for the believers (Hebrews 13:20). What this means is that despite the discouragement that we might have in reading Deuteronomy 7:9, it points to its fulfillment in Christ Jesus. And in that we can rejoice.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for your faithfulness to the eternal Covenant in Christ Jesus. Thank you, Jesus, for purchasing this Covenant for me with your blood and guaranteeing it with your resurrection. As I surrender myself to you this day, Holy Spirit empower me to walk in the joy of obedience. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
