Daily Light Devotional: Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)

Text: 2 Peter 1:4

Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

When we think of the benefits of the resurrection of Jesus, we automatically think that the resurrection guarantees the benefits of the crucifixion: the forgiveness of our sins, our sin debt paid in full, freedom from the law of sin and death, not to mention freedom for the power of sin itself.

However, there is another benefit that the resurrection guarantees – our union with Christ. The moment we are born again we are united in and with Christ. Paul uses the phrase – “in Christ” 65 times. That makes it very significant. And yet, many seem so unaware of this concept. This is a huge topic. For today’s devotion letsfocus on three verses that flesh out the benefits of being united in Christ. First, John 15:4-11, Jesus abides in us and we abide in Him and in that abiding there is the fruit of an intimate relationship. Secondly, Ephesians 1:3 makes it evident that every spiritual blessing in Christ is  in us. And thirdly, from our text today in 2 Peter 1:4, we have this awesome privilege of being able to “participate in His divine nature. Jesus, who created the universe, who died and rose for us, dwells in us so that we can experience His divine nature, know His unconditional love and become like Him. All this gives us joy, peace, hope, security and confidence. These are the ongoing benefits of His resurrection presence in us.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for these benefits of the resurrection. As I surrender myself to you this day, may benefits and blessings of these promises fill me with much joy, peace and hope. May everything I do bring glory to you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
