Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by
deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbour bitter envy
and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such
“wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For
where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil
practice.
But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving,
considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.
Peace-makers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.
Gracious God and Heavenly Father,
On the news we see examples of people who are adept at promoting themselves in the pursuit of power and are willing to do anything to achieve it. They leave nothing but corruption and destruction in their wake. The sins of envy, pride and selfish ambition can lead to wealth and power but this is no indication of wisdom. True wisdom brings peace, order and righteousness. It is demonstrated in a life well lived, full of the fruit of the spirit, and a reverence for you, LORD.
If we would be wise, we must be pure in our motivations, show mercy, be considerate of others, and submit to your will. God grant that it may be so.
