Text: 1 Peter 2:2-3

Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Unfortunately, many Christians have the idea that the goal of the Christian is heaven itself. In having this idea, this diminishes the Christian faith to the “here by and by”. We become so “heavenly minded that we become no earthly good”. Heaven is not our goal or our purpose. Heaven is our destination. Our verse for today tells us that our purpose is to grow up in our salvation.

What does it mean to “grow up in your salvation”. For Peter that entails growing in Godliness and holiness (see 2 Peter 1:3-7). The Greek word for “salvation” is “soteria” which is understood at spiritual rescue, deliverance, preservation and soundness.  Those are the results of being saved. The root word for salvation is “soter” which is “saviour”. As we are saved or rooted into a relationship with Jesus, our goal is to demonstrate “fruit in keeping with repentance”. That is, we are to grow into the fullness of Jesus. In dpoingthis we are working out our salvation (the fullness of it) in Christ Jesus, with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12). The goal, the command of the Christian life is to become like Jesus. This prepares us for heaven.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, on this day, I yield myself to Jesus, that His fullness in me may occupy all that I am and I will become like Him. By the power of the Holy Spirit, help me to never forsake the spiritual milk necessary for that inner transformation. Be glorified in all that I am. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
