Daily Light Devotional: Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)
March 26
Text: 1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
There is a theological camp that says – “since all my sins are forgiven there is no need to confess the sins I commit therefore, I can do whatever I want and enjoy my life.” Our first response is the same as Paul’s response in Romans, that grace is not given so we can do what we want, but to be empowered to do what God wants (see Romans 6:1-7). Furthermore, the argument is false. The Christian life is not about me living my life, but rather Christ living His life in and through me(Galatians 2:20)
And this points to why confession is still needed. We have once and for all been forgiven “judicially” at the cross, but as we continue to sin, we confess to the things that disrupt us relationally with God. We confess to keep our hearts clean and pure, to maintain intimacy with the Lord.
It’s important to establish a daily routine (the best time is during our evening prayers) to reflect on our day and to confess all our sins. When we do that, the Lord forgives us, cleanses us and purifies us and keeps us strong and faithful.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you that at the cross all my sins have been forgiven once and for all. And thank you that everyday you cleanse me as I confess my daily transgression. Purify me by your Spirit, that you might shine through me this day. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
