Text: Philippians 1:29

For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him.

We tend to struggle with the idea that we are called to “enter the sufferings of Christ”. And we struggle with this idea because on one hand we think that we have to literally be crucified. That’s not necessarily what is being suggested, though the crucifixion of Jesus points us in the right direction for understanding. And on the other hand, many assume that we have to experience extreme persecution to enter the sufferings of Jesus.

To enter the sufferings of Jesus needs to be simplified. Paul gives us a clue for clarification in Philippians 3:13 – “I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death”. What were the Romans and Jews doing to Jesus before He was crucified. Yes, physically abusing Him. But let’s simply it – they were sinning against Him. When someone treats us badly, when they gossip about us, when they insult us, when they mock us – they are sinning against us. And Jesus said that was going to happen. And in that time of sins being committed against us, we can draw closer to the Lord and know His power to walk in peaceful victory.

Whatever trial or tribulation you might experience today, you will because it has been granted for you to do so. Embracing it and living through it it part of the process of dying to self.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, whatever happens to me this day, I embrace it and ask that you will sustain me by the resurrection power of Jesus Christ. May everything, I go through today be used to bring glory to you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
