Daily Light Devotional: Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)

Text: Romans 1:1
“Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God.”
One of the greatest misunderstandings of the 21st Century Church is in accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour, Jesus is now going to help me live “my life”. This is completely wrong. The verse from Romans 1:1 is a corrective to that false idea.
There is nothing in this verse that has Paul speaking or writing about his own personal life, his own dreams or agendas. Paul knew that it was no longer him living, but rather Christ living in him.Paul’s statement from Romans 1:1 is first of all a statement of humility: Paul, a servant of Christ. A servant is set apart for a specific assignment and for Paul this assignment (calling) is to be an apostle. Notice, Paul didn’t choose the assignment, God did. And the goal of that assignment is the Gospel – the Good News that Jesus is alive.
The structure of this verse is applicable to all of us.
I could read this verse two ways – Bernie, a servant of Christ, called to be a pastor, set apart for the Gospel. Or it could read – Bernie, a servant of Christ, called to be a disciple, set apart for the Gospel. Whichever way I would want to read it, the point is still the same – I am completely dependent upon the Lord for everything and everything is in submission to Him and to His will. It’s not me living for Jesus, it’s Jesus living in and through me.
How would this verse read for you and your life?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I humble myself to you today and submit myself to you, that you would live your life in and through me and that my life will in fact be a life of servitude to you and an expression of the Gospel that you live in and through me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
