Daily Light Devotional: You Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)

Text: Romans 10:9-10

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

In Matthew 5:11 Jesus states – “What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.” People who are dead in sin, will also have hearts that are dead and defiled. There is no possible way that anything good can come out of that heart.

In our text for today Paul is also making a connection between heart and mouth. Salvation begins with the heart. When one is born again, they have a new heart. A new heart beating with the blood of Jesus. And when the heart believes, one is justified (pardoned) and then from one’s heart one is able to declare with their mouth “Jesus is Lord”. And no one can declare that apart from the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit causes us to be born again, gives is the ability to receive the gift of faith in Christ and quickens our will so we can declare that Jesus is Lord. God did it all. We had nothing to do with the process of salvation, lest we boast.

Are you born again? Are you pardoned? Do you declare that Jesus is Lord? Yes? Then you are saved. Let the joy of salvation carry you through this day to His glory.

Prayer. Almighty God, thank you for making me alive to believe, receive Christ, to be pardoned and to be able to declare Jesus is alive and He is Lord. May the joy of the Good News overflow in me today. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
