Text: Romans 5:3
We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance.
One of the most dangerous assumptions that many Christians have is the notion that because “I am a Christian, nothing bad is going to happen to me.” That is not our experience. Tragedies and pain are experienced everyday by believers. What are we to make of this? Our verse today from Romans 5:3 gives us a huge clue as to how to handle the strife of life: “we can rejoice – when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance.” Pain and strife, trials and tribulation are opportunities for growth; opportunities to experience the Lord’s grace and power leading us forth; producing in us the character of Jesus. This is why Paul will say later in Romans 8:28 that “God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.” Our challenge is to not understand why these things are happening, but to traust the Lord, lean not on our understanding but acknowledge Him and He will lead us on the straight path (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Prayer: Father, I know not what today brings, but whether good or bad, I will trust you, lean upon you, acknowledge you as you lead me – trusting that I will learn to endure all things. Be glorified in and through me this day. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
