Daily Light Devotional: Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)
October 28 2026
Text: Psalm 119:83
Though I am like a wineskin in the smoke, I do not forget your decrees.
Overwhelming circumstances can be exhausting and overwhelming to the point of beating us down. The reference to wineskins in smoke, is referencing these kinds of circumstances. Wine was either kept in clay jars or wineskins made of goat stomachs. Clay jars were cured by being baked in ovens. Wineskins were cured by being hung above an open fire where the smoke would cause the skin to be cured so that the wine wouldn’t seep through the skin. However, if one was not paying attention, and the wineskin hung to long in the smoke – the skin would dry out and be useless. This is a phrase to denote circumstances that have caused one to be shriveled and dried out. The Psalmist declares that when he is dried out and shriveled by the circumstances and feeling quite overwhelmed, he will not forget the Word of God. The Word of God keeps him focused on the faithfulness of God.
Prayer: Father God, thank you for your faithfulness. When I am overwhelmed, Holy Spirit keep me focused on the Living Word in the written Word, that I too might be faithful. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
