Text: Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
This verse from Romans 8:28 is a favorite of many and is also quoted by many. Unfortunately, there is the tendency to think that God just works in all things for my good. We translate that into – “He working in the circumstances of my job as a plumber for my good”(translation: I will get as promotion); “He’s working in the trials of my marriage for my good” (translation: he is going to fix my spouse). In thinking this way, we can begin to think of God is all about “me”. But the last phrase of our verse for today corrects this thinking. Everything that God is doing in our lives is for our good is “according to His purpose.” The question is: what is His purpose? The answer to that is found in verse 29. His purpose is to “conform us into the image of His Son.” That changes everything. God works in the difficult circumstances at work to conform us to Christlikeness. God works in our difficult relationships so that we are conformed to Christlikeness.
In doing this good work in us, we become conduits of the love, life, and light of Jesus Christ. This removes the Christian life from being about me, to being all about Jesus Christ: where I no longer live, but Christ lives in me (Galatians 2:20).
Prayer: Thank you Father, thank you for the good news that you are working through all things in my life, to reveal the goodness of Jesus in me so that the world knows that Jesus is alive. May I revel and rejoice in your faithfulness to me today. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
