Text: Galatians 5:22-23

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

The fruit of the Spirit. What is it? The way the verse is written, “the fruit of the Spirit is…” makes it clear that they are all to be taken at one unit. We know thisbecause its says – “the fruit of the Spirit”, not the “fruits of the Spirit”. This begs the question: when these descriptors are taken as unit – what exactly is this fruit? John 15 gives us our answer.

In John 15 Jesus says “abide in me” (which can also be translated as remain in me or live in me) and He will abide in us. He lives in us and we live in Him. When this happens, Jesus promises that we will bear fruit, more fruit and much fruit. It is apparent then, that this fruit is the character of Jesus Christ.

We can only conclude that the fruit of the Spirit listed in our text today is the very character of Jesus being produced and multiplied in us by the power of the Holy Spirit. As you begin your day, die to self and surrender to the work of the Holy Spirit in order that the character in Jesus might manifest in you and become a witness to Him to those around you.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for abiding and living in me. I surrender all that I am to you in order that your character might manifest in me today. May others see only Jesus who is in me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen,
