Daily Light Devotional: Your Word is a lamp onto my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)

Romans 8:17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
Most people when they die leave an inheritance. Jesus has an inheritance that was made known when He died. And it was made visible in His resurrection back to glory, as He takes His place at the right hand of God the Father. That inheritance is a spiritual blessing, His glory and His authority. And because we are the adopted children of God, and “in Christ”, that inheritance has been transferred to us. That is why our text today says that we are “joint heirs with Christ”. That is an amazing thought. Everything that belongs to Jesus, belongs to us as well because we are joint heirs with Christ. But here is the question: how do we gain access to such an inheritance? The text tells us. We gain access to this inheritance as we “share in the sufferings of Christ”. How do we do that? Christ suffered on the cross. Our suffering is on our cross as we die to self. As we die to self, becoming less and less, Jesus and His inheritance become greater. This is what disciples of Christ do – they die to self so that they might live in Christ, in His inheritance.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for going to the cross for me. Thank you for such a glorious inheritance. As I choose to die to self in response to your grace and goodness, may I know the joy of your inheritance – your peace, your goodness, your glory and your authority. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
