Daily Light Devotional: Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)

Text: Psalm 119:37

Turn my eyes away from worthless things; preserve my life according to your word.

One of the misconceptions that people have about salvation is that because all our sins are forgiven on the cross through the shed blood of Jesus, that we are at liberty to do whatever we want. This false idea suggests that because our sins are forgiven, we can go ahead and sin. Paul addressed this in Romans 6:1, that by no means do we continue in sin, because in Christwe have died to sin.

The reality is that we belong to Jesus, and He rules in and through us. And through thepower of the Holy Spirit, our will is bound to His will and the Holy Spirit produces in a the fruit of self-control by which we are able to have our eyes “turned away from evil things”. This is the work of grace. It is by thise grace that He binds us to His Word, and His Word becomes that preserving agent, keeping us from the lies and influence of the world.

The Word of God points to the Living Word, Jesus Christ, in whom we live and move and have our being. And as we submit and surrender to Him and His written Word, He will turn our eyes from worthless things and preserve us from spiritual harm.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you that in Christ I am your child. And thank you for the written Word that keeps me safe from all harm. Bind me to yourself today, and turn my eyes from worthless things. Preserve my life from all that is wicked. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
