Text: Isaiah 534:3-4 (NLT)

He was despised and rejected— a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care. Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins!

As we embark on our journey through Holy Week to the day of Crucifixion and Resurrection, it is important at times to remind ourselves exactly what Jesus did and what He suffered.

This text from Isaiah 53 starts with the startling reality that Jesus was “despised and rejected”. This is emotional pain in that he became a man of great sorrows with “deepest grief”. In John 1:11 it says that “He came to His own but His own did not receive Him”. Jesus came to the descendants of Abraham; He came as their Messiah, their Saviour, their King, their redeemer. And they rejected Him outright. The stripped Him of his identity and dignity, beat Him and whipped Him. And yet, He still went to the cross for Him.

How many of us despised and rejected Jesus before we were actually humble enough to receive Him as Lord and Saviour.

Let us give thanks to the Lord, in that while He knew He would be despised and rejected, He still wnet to the cross for us. What amazing love.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the reminder of what Jesus endured for us. May I always be humbled by such a love that Jesus displayed on the cross and never take it for granted. In Jesus’ name I pray.
