Text: Philippians 2:14
Do everything without complaining and arguing,
That is quite the verse from Philippians 2:14 – “do everything without complaining and arguing”. Everything? Let that think in. You mean I am not supposed to complain about that driver taking too long to make their turn? Or the driver who is driving too slow? You mean I am not to complain about that person in the express checkout who wants to tell their life story to the cashier? That is exactly what Paul is saying. And our response is “that’s impossible!”
Two things to note. First, Paul wrote this while in prison, where he would eventually be beheaded for his faith. He never complained. Instead he said that God was using this to share the Good News of Jesus with the guards. Secondly, we have to note verse 13. Verse 13 says “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.” That’s incredible, God is working in us giving us the power and desire (will) to please Him.” And how do we please Him – by not complaining or arguing about anything. And just like that it is no longer impossible for us to not complain or argue. Rather, as we surrender to the power of the Holy Spirit within us, we can actually not complain or argue. We can in fact reflect the image and presence of Jesus within us. Surrender to that power for today!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for giving me the power to live for you by not complaining or argue. I surrender all that I am to you, that by that power I will instead reflect the gentleness of Jesus Christ – my Lord and Saviour. In His name I pray. Amen.
