Text: Joshua 5:13
“Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”
Joshua and the Israelites have entered the Promised Land with the mission to drive out the inhabitants. Joshua finds himself looking over the City of Jericho. Jericho was at that time the greatest and strongest city in the land with large walled fortifications. As Joshua is observing the city, he sees in front of him a man with drawn sword. Unbeknownst to Joshua, this was a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus Christ, the 2nd person of the Trinity, Yahweh, the commander of the heavenly hosts.
Think only of his assignment, Joshua asks the man: “are you for us or for our enemies?” That’s a natural question, given the situation that Joshua was in. But nothing could have prepared him for the man’s answer: “Neither”, He answered, but as the commander of the heavenly host I have come”. Joshua bowed to the ground in acknowledgement of being in the presence of the Lord. The Lord saying “neither”. No matter what our assignment is, it always fits into God’s bigger plan. The Lord is always for His will and always on His side. Even if the whole world is against the Lord, the Lord’s will is the will that is going to be done. And as Joshua humbled himself to the Lord and His will, we must do the same.
Prayer: Almighty God, I acknowledge that the will you are accomplishing in and through me, is subservient to your grand and greater will. I surrender all that I am, and all that I am about to do today for you, to you. Be glorified in and through me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
