Text: Romans 8:1

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus…”

Many Christians struggle with shame as they continue to sin. When we allow our old nature to continue to call the shots, and we sin, we beat ourselves up with thoughts like – “I am such a fool”, or “I am no good”. Moreover, the devil likes to beat the stew out of as with unnecessary guilt. We need to grab a hold of the verse for today: “there is NO condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Born again believers are “in Christ Jesus”, therefore you can’t be condemned by your continued sin. What’s going on in this verse? Our verse starts with “therefore”. This points us back to what was written in chapter 7. In chapter it says that in the body (in Christ) you “died to the law”. And now in chapter 8:1 it says there is no condemnation “because through Jesus Christ the law of the Spirit gives you life” (8:2). Picture this: if a non-believer comes into the court of the Law, that non believer would be condemned because of their sin.

However, when a believer comes into the court of law, they are declared innocent because of the shed blood of Jesus, that paid your sin debt in full; and the blood cleansed you so that you are forgiven. Cleansed, pardoned and forgiven – which means no condemnation. This is why believers can say that because I am IN Christ, I am not condemned, so I don’t have to allow guilt and shame to define and control me. Instead rejoice that in Christ you are a new creation and nothing, not even your future sins can change that.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the sacrifice of your Son, my Lord; for the shedding of blood for my pardon, forgiveness and cleansing. May the joy of the Gospel give me joy, peace and confidence as I live for you today. Be glorified in all that I am and in all that I do. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
