Daily Light Devotional: Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path (Psalm 119:105)

Text: Psalm 119:43

Never take your word of truth from my mouth, for I have put my hope in your laws.

In Jeremiah 1:9, God reached out and touched the prophet’s mouth and said – “I have put my words in your mouth.” Jeremiah would later describe that eating God’s word tasted sweet like honey. The image here is of the word of God being digested, being absorbed. In that capacity, the Word of God remains in the mouth. It retains its effectiveness.

To “digest” the Word of God suggests the discipline of memorization. Moreover, to keep the Word of God in one’s mouth suggests meditation. The Hebrew word for meditate, hagah, means to both muse and mutter, to speak. Why would one to such lengths of memorizing the Word of God in order to speak them out? Because, at the Psalmist declares – “for I have put my hope in your laws”. Here hope lends itself to confidence. Because the Psalmist has absolute confidence in the Word of God, He is going to keep the Word in His mouth. He is going to keep digesting and savouring it. He is going to keep memorizing the Word and speaking out loud the Word.

Prayer: Father God, thank you that your Word is true, infallible and without error. By your grace help me to keep your Word in my mouth by memorizing it and by declaring it out loud. Be glorified in and through these disciplines. In Jesus’ name I  pray. Amen.
